Learning for Work

Why is English and Maths so important?

A good question! I want you to think about this…

Think about what you do and how you do it, in your everyday lives. It could be doing the grocery shopping, buying something for your home or making a meal etc. Now think of all the ways that you use Maths and English in these everyday situations. Are you surprising yourself? It’s not that hard really, it’s just that when anybody says Maths and English, we immediately think of formality and a sense of dread… but it doesn’t have to be that way, as already, you have a head start, as we said in the beginning about grocery shopping etc.  We just need to recognise our transferable skills and turn them into English and Maths qualifications. Why?  Well if you don’t already know this please read further….

Employment Opportunities

A major survey of skill levels among adults in work found that, for employers, English skills are of greatest concern, particularly communication skills (listening and speaking) such as good writing, spelling, grammar and vocabulary could be improved.

Lack of Maths skills is another barrier to employment - people with low maths skills are twice as likely to be unemployed.

Education is now open to everyone in the UK to access as they want, can and need to. It's impossible to go a day without using English and Maths skills, and a good level of understanding means that you can have more control over things like your finances, communication, and you can gain a better understanding of issues such as what’s going on in the world around us, including politics, particularly during this awful pandemic.
